Cool summer escapes in Europe

Southern Europe now spends July and August above 35°C, and the classic beach holiday has quietly become an indoor holiday. A coolcation flips the brief: instead of the warmest place you can afford, you pick the place where being outside all day is genuinely pleasant.

Every destination below is scored the same way the app scores it — typical daily high for the month, rain probability, daylight hours, crowding, nature access, city texture and an honest estimate of flights plus accommodation. Nothing here is a live fare, and nothing here is a forecast; these are climate expectations you can plan around.

Scored for 5 nights in July, departing Rome (typical 32°C at home), target 1220°C, budget €1200. Change any of it on the search.

Good to know

What counts as a cool summer destination?
In practice, a typical daily high between 12°C and 20°C. Warm enough to hike in a t-shirt at midday, cool enough to sleep without air conditioning.
Is it cheaper than a hot beach holiday?
Often, yes — northern shoulder-season prices beat peak Mediterranean rates, though Norway, Iceland and Switzerland are the expensive end. The guide shows an estimated total per destination so you can see which is which.
Does cool mean rainy?
Sometimes. Atlantic destinations like Bergen and the Faroes trade heat for weather. The Cool Score docks points for rain probability, so a place that ranks high is cool and mostly dry.
